Top Ten Ghost Horror Shows That Will Make You Scream

If you’re not afraid of the dark, these ghost horror shows will make your skin crawl and give you nightmares to last all night long! Just be warned—you should turn off all the lights, put on your headphones, and turn up the volume before watching any of these shows. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

The Twilight Zone

The X-Files (five sentences): The X-Files is another classic ghost horror show that aired from 1993 to 2002. The show follows FBI agents Mulder and Scully as they investigate paranormal cases. The show was created by Chris Carter and starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. It had two nine season runs with 202 episodes.

Black Mirror

An anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, Black Mirror is a sci-fi horror show that will make you scream. Each episode is a standalone story that explores the dark side of human nature, and the technology that we've created.

Stranger Things

A group of kids in a small town in Hawkins, Indiana, are investigating the disappearance of their friend, Will Byers. They soon discover that a government laboratory is experimenting with supernatural creatures from another dimension. The kids must band together to defeat the monsters and save their friend.

The OA

If you’re looking for a modern take on ghost horror shows, look no further than Netflix’s own production, The OA. It is a gripping series about Prairie Johnson (a missing blind woman) who returns home after years away with her sight restored and with the ability to do things that seem superhuman. She becomes the center of media attention and it seems as though she might be able to answer all of the questions surrounding her disappearance—but soon people who were drawn to her case start disappearing too. It's difficult to give away any more without spoiling anything, but suffice it to say that this show is worth your time!

American Horror Story

AHS is an American anthology horror television series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. Described as an anthology series, each season is conceived as a self-contained miniseries, following a disparate set of characters and settings, and a storyline with its own beginning, middle, and end. The first season, retroactively subtitled Murder House, takes place in Los Angeles, California during the year 2011, and centers on the Harmon family: Ben (Dylan McDermott), Vivien (Connie Britton) and their daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga), who move into a restored mansion that has a dark past. Evan Peters plays Tate Langdon, one of Ben's patients who have homicidal tendencies.

With all its scares and suspenseful moments, The X-Files will keep you on the edge of your seat!


Although it may not be what you traditionally think of when it comes to a ghost horror show, Riverdale definitely has its moments. The show is based on the Archie comics, which are set in a small town that's haunted by a supernatural force. There have been several creepy episodes, including one where the characters are possessed by the ghosts of their dead parents.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Based on the book series of the same name, this show follows the Baudelaire orphans as they are pursued by the evil Count Olaf. The series is dark, funny, and will keep you guessing until the very end. It’s also been a long time since we’ve seen an adaption of a children’s book that doesn’t hold back with violence or gore for adults.

-Stranger Things: A group of friends, a missing child, and strange occurrences bring together a town in turmoil. Stranger Things is an adventure-horror sci-fi TV series set in 1980s Indiana where a young boy vanishes into thin air under highly suspicious circumstances. Friends, family and local police search for answers - what they find isn't what they expected.

Penny Dreadful

A gothic horror story that takes place in Victorian London, Penny Dreadful is a must-watch for fans of the genre. The show follows explorer Sir Malcolm Murray as he searches for his missing daughter, who has been taken by evil forces. Along the way, he enlists the help of American gunslinger Ethan Chandler and psychic medium Vanessa Ives. Together, they battle vampires, werewolves, and other dark creatures that lurk in the city's shadows.

The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Bly Manor (six sentences): The Haunting of Bly Manor is the follow up to The Haunting of Hill House. The show is about a family who moves into a manner that is haunted by ghosts. The family must deal with the ghosts, as well as their own personal demons. The show is full of scares and will make you scream. It’s one of the best ghost horror shows out there. Another great scary show is 13 Reasons Why, which follows high school student Clay Jensen after he finds out his classmate Hannah committed suicide. He sets out on a mission to find out why she did it and ends up uncovering her 13 reasons through cassette tapes she recorded before her death. It’s a powerful show that makes for riveting viewing
